Cognac Producers Maison Martell has recently launched its Les Remarquables de Martell collection. This collection will see an annual release of a single, one-of-a-kind bottle (dame-jeanne). According to Elite Traveler, Martell’s first release in this series is currently among the most expensive Cognacs in the world with a valuation of €1 Million ( $1.08 Million US).
The first release in this new collection is a blend of two 70-year-old eaux-de-vie which were hand-selected by Martell cellar master, Christophe Valtaud. The brandies were sourced from the Grand Champagne region (Cru) of France prior to aging in Maison Martell’s Port du Lys cellar.
Cru is the French word for a growth region. There are six different sub-regions (Cru) within Cognac. Each area is graded by the French government according to the quality of the Cognac produced there with Grande Champagne being placed in the top spot. The Cognac is unique as it is made up of a blend of two old expressions instead of a vintage or single Cognac aged for an extended period.
For each of the one-of-a-kind Les Remarquables de Martell releases, the Maison will partner with a different artist to create the decanter (dame-jeanne). Dame-Jeanne translates to Lady Jeanne but refers to the large, round glass bottles with a thin neck often used for brandies in France.
For this first release, Maison Martell has sought the skills of French artist Laurentine Perilhou – a specialist in the art of macramé. The dame-jeanne is adorned with gold thread that is produced by the last manufacturer of its kind in Lyon. The thread is woven into a delicate representation of Martell’s vineyards complete with the symbol of the Maison – a swift. Inside the golden macrame are three synthetic sapphires and a single diamond set in 22-karat gold. Perilhou spent over 800 hours finely crafting the piece for the highly valued cognac.
Cognac is taking premium to a whole new level with many one-off releases and special bottles being produced in recent years. The first release from the Les Remarquables de Martell collection is valued higher than even Remy Martin’s famous Louis XIII L’Odyssee D’un Roi Cognac which is priced at around $134,750 US. However, The title of the most expensive cognac bottle in the world probably goes to the Henri IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac Grande Champagne valued at $2 million.
Martell’s $1 Million release has more included than just the ornate bottle. As well as the cognac itself, the purchaser of the one-off creation will gain access to a host of bespoke experiences and accessories. The first of which is a cabinet designed for the special display of the unique bottle. The cabinet includes six Baccarat crystal glasses, a drawing pipette (also embellished by Perilhou to match the dame-jeanne), and a pair of embroidered white gloves.
As for the experiences, the buyer and three guests will also be hosted in both Paris and Cognac by Maison Martell for a series of private experiences across the two locations. The client can even have the chance to personalize the liquid while at a tasting with Cellar Master allowing adding one or more rare eaux-de-vie to the blend.
In the world of rum, Dictador has been catching up with the premiumization of its spirit. The Columbian rum producer made the most expensive rum in the world with the release of its M-City series which features gold bottles with prices starting at $1.5 million per one-of-a-kind bottle.
