John Daly Says He Once Beat Tiger Woods in a PGA Tournament While So Hungover He Was Still Drunk Off Whiskey

During an interview with Tucker Carlson, renowned golfer John Daly shared a hilarious story about a time he managed to beat Tiger Woods during a PGA Tournament — despite being so hungover he was still drunk.
Carlson began the segment by mentioning he’d heard Daly beat Woods hungover once, and Daly corrected him by saying, “I was still drunk, actually.”
According to Daly, this happened during around 1994 at the Sherwood Country Club in Lake Sherwood, California.
“It was only like 12 or 15 pros, but we didn’t play too good the first day, and I’m sitting there with all my buddies,” Daly shared. “And we have the round table in Sherwood, and I’ve got my bottle of Jack Daniel’s.”
At some point while Daly and his friends were having a good time (or drinking their sorrows away) with their whiskey, Woods walked in. When asked to join the group and have a drink, Woods rebuffed the offer and said he was going to go hit some balls.
A few hours went by, and Woods returned. The group asked him to have a drink again, but Woods said he was going to work out instead.
“And this is going on for about five or six hours. We’re still there just pounding, getting drunk, having a good time,” Daly said.
At this point, Woods returns for a third time, dressed in a tuxedo.
“Where are you going?” Daly recalls asking the star.
It turns out, there was a dinner planned, which Daly was supposed to be at. This was news to Daly, and he didn’t have time to get ready, much less sober up.
Daly was barefoot and disheveled after hours of drinking, with “s–t spilled all over” him.
Daly says he stumbled over to the ballroom, spotted a guitar, tuned it up, played a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” received a standing ovation and took off.
The next morning, Daly prepared to tee off against Woods. Still drunk from the night before, he had his caddy fetch him a whiskey and coke (Crown Royal or Jack Daniel’s, Daly says) — a little hair of the dog to keep him going, we suppose.
“I grab my 3-iron, go on the tee. To make a long story short, I shoot like 65, Tiger shot like 71,” Daly said. “He just shook his head the whole day.”
Daly said this was one of two times he’s drank on a golf course, with the other being during a long wait on the back nine at Riviera in Los Angeles, where Daly says he drank about four or five Coors Lights.
