The BIPOC and female-owned brand, Equiano has announced the debut of its first Vintage rum, Ominira. The rum is an 11-year-old blend of Gray’s and Foursquare Rums. This will be the first release of the brand’s new Legacy Series.

The rum will join the brand’s two mainstays, Equiano Original and Equiano Light

Equinano was co-founded by Aaisha Dadral and Amanda Kakembo in 2019 alongside close friend and long-time business partner Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell. The brand is named after Olaudah Equiano, an 18th-century writer, abolitionist, entrepreneur and freedom fighter.  Olaudah paved his way to liberation by selling puncheons of rum.

Ominira which means “freedom” in Yoruba also takes inspiration from the brand’s namesake. As a further homage to Olaudah’s history, the 11-year age statement represents the age at which he was enslaved and the ABV of 52% represents the age he lived to after gaining his freedom.

Ominira is a blend featuring rums distilled by the acclaimed Barbadian distillery Foursquare and Gray’s distillery from Mauritius. The rum is matured for 11 years in bourbon and cognac casks with a final finish in sherry casks.

“Vintage rum has quickly evolved into a highly cherished collector’s item, and it is an incredible honor to be unveiling Equiano’s first vintage rum, Ominira, to market,” said Global Rum Ambassador and Equiano co-founder Ian Burrell.

“Ominira is a rare blend that beautifully marries rums from two of the best distilleries in the world, and two cultures that represent Equiano’s identity. The result is an extraordinary piece of rum history that encapsulates the freedom and spirit of our brand’s namesake, Olaudah Equiano – a liquid to celebrate, toast and share with loved ones.”

Ominira will be available on April 15, for a retail price of £180 ($230 US) on the brand’s website. The first release in Equiano’s Legacy series is limited in supply with just 3,000 bottles available.
