Domino’s Pizza Just Unveiled a Red Wine That Connects to Your Smartphone — And We Have So Many Questions

On Wednesday, Domino’s Pizza — yes, that Domino’s, the best-selling pizza chain in America — teamed up with Yellow Tail to unveil a red wine that pairs with pepperoni and piping-hot cheese pulls. 

The fast food giant is rolling out 1.5-liter bottles of Domino’s Red Blend that the brand says are “crafted to provide the perfect sip with every slice.” Produced at the Casella winery in Southeast Australia, each bottle features the pizza brand’s iconic red and blue logo alongside Yellow Tail’s rock wallaby, often confused for a kangaroo. The blend is now available for purchase through Total Wine at a suggested retail price of $13.47.

For those in search of an unusually tech-savvy upgrade, Domino’s has you covered. The brand plans to release a limited set of “Twist.Tap.Order” caps on February 3 that will help expedite the pizza ordering process. According to Domino’s, users can tap their smartphone to the wine cap after it has been twisted off, triggering a function on the Domino’s app that sets up their next order.

“Domino’s is known for innovations,” Kate Trumbull, Domino’s EVP Chief Marketing Officer, said in a news release. “We’re always looking for ways to make ordering easier than ever, and ‘Twist.Tap.Order.’ does that. It’s all about convenience, and we’re excited to give customers yet another fun way they can order their favorite pizza.”

Though these fast food-ordering wine caps may be the first of their kind, the vino contained within the bottle is not. In fact, Domino’s Red Blend is the latest in a trend.

Last November, Pizza Hut joined forces with Irvine Winery to unveil a tomato wine made with actual tomatoes. Described as the perfect accompaniment to the brand’s recently released Triple Treat Box, the wine was said to possess an  “aromatic blend of fresh herbs and spices with rich, sun-ripened tomato notes and a subtle hint of toasted oak — reminiscent of a perfectly baked pizza crust.” Buyers were encouraged to drink it chilled.

That same week, Papa Johns collaborated with Ryan Reynold’s Aviation Gin on a cocktail kit themed around pepperoncini peppers. The star of the show — the affectionately titled “Cini Tini” — was a drink mixed with one and a half ounces of gin and half an ounce of pepperoncini brine.

Domino’s seems more than happy to keep the boozy pizza train on track. Visitors to the Yellow Tail website can also find a variety of recommended pairings, including such treasures as “Merlot & Meatzza” and “Pinot Grigio & Pacific Veggie.”
