Templeton Distillery announced on Tuesday the release of Templeton Midnight Rye, a blend of rye whiskey and port wine.
“At Templeton, our relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries and fostering innovation is what propels us forward,” Templeton SVP of Commercial at Infinium Spirits Shane Fitzharris said in a news release. “The debut of Templeton Midnight Rye defines this exhilarating era of creativity. Even as we look towards a future where all our liquid originates directly from Templeton Distillery, we remain dedicated to providing endless possibilities and experimenting with new tastes and flavors. This commitment elevates the whiskey-drinking experience to new heights and embodies our passion for excellence.”
The whiskey hosts a suggested retail price of $39.99 and is available across the U.S.
Templeton Midnight Rye is a blend of American rye whiskeys with a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. The distillate is sourced (likely from MGP Ingredients in Indiana) and aged at the Templeton distillery in Iowa. The whiskeys were matured in American Oak barrels, and the rye was married with a dark Port wine before the whiskey was bottled.
The brand claims Midnight Rye hosts aromas of dark cherries, black fruit like figs and a bit of spices on the nose of the pour; a palate bearing a blend of cinnamon, dark chocolate and cloves; and a finish with dried fruits and black pepper.
Blending whiskeys with fortified wines and other tipples is highly unusual in the whiskey world but not unheard of.
J. Rieger & Co. blends its whiskeys with sherry as a nod to an antique whiskey production technique that dates back to the 1880s. WhistlePig Whiskey founder Raj Peter Bhatka’s new brand, Bhatka, is known to blend its whiskeys with Calvados in the production process.
As for Templeton’s Midnight Rye, the brand touts its latest release is full of “limitless possibilities” in terms of cocktails, and recommends drinking it in a Manhattan.
