On Wednesday, Whisky Auctioneer announced that through the auctioning of The Demeter Collection, the brand raised £49,065.75 ($61,510) The brand unveiled the collection in early March during Women’s Month and claimed the buyer’s commission would be donated to Our Whisky Foundation, a nonprofit that supports women working in whisky around the world.
The whisky auction site reported that the top bid went to a 44-year-old The Dalmore whisky honoring Margaret Nicol, the first female distillery manager in Scotland. It fetched a winning bid of £12,500 ($15,670).
“It has been a privilege for us to support the OurWhisky Foundation in providing not just a platform for this groundbreaking sale, but also to promote the contributions of women to the industry as a whole,” Whisky Auctioneer Head Curator and Spirits Specialist Joe Wilson said in a news release. “From the distilleries and independent bottlers who generously donated to the bidders from across the world, it is incredible to see whisky lovers come together to make a real difference.”
The Demeter Collection marked the first auction of whiskies devoted to honoring women’s achievements within the world of whisky, and it featured 18 whiskies from prestigious brands like Laphroaig, The GlenDronach and Ardbeg.
Some other highlights of the auction included the £9,700 ($12,160) sale of the 20-year-old Ardbeg and the first bottle drawn from the budding Derbyshire White Peak Distillery, Wire Works’ Love, Sweat & Tears, which sold for £3,350 ($4,200) The sale marked an impressive debut for the whisky brand.
The donated funds will be allocated to helping mentorship programs, networking events and the buildout of an online magazine for Our Whisky Foundation, according to Whisky Auctioneer.
“We’re blown away by the fantastic amount raised from the inaugural Demeter Collection,” OurWhisky Foundation founder Becky Paskin said. “The OurWhisky Foundation provides much-needed support and guidance for women in whisky as well as the wider industry, but we are in desperate need of funding if we’re to continue providing our services. Thanks to Whisky Auctioneer, all our lot donors and the hundreds of bidders coming together over a shared love of a dram, the fantastic amount raised will help us continue making whisky an inclusive space for everyone.”
