Released by Jack Daniel's in August 2023 as part of the brand's Single Barrel Special Release collection, this whiskey is distilled from a mashbill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley, aged at least five years and then finished for an additional two years in a heavily toasted barrel.
This expression is definitely for the more initiated Tennessee rye whiskey drinker and not for newcomers who are looking for a smooth, more approachable rye whiskey experience.
There are certainly people out there who will enjoy this whiskey, but I recommend trying anything else in the range of other excellent options currently in the lineup instead.
Sometimes too much finishing time isn’t necessarily a good thing, and Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release Heritage Barrel Rye overstayed its welcome when it comes to finishing time.
This is a hefty rye and a fun one at that. It's distinctive, hard to place as similar to anything else I've had and is simply an easy drinker, easy to enjoy and easy to deep dive into.

House Review
Nose:
Powerful and woody, packed with jam and maple, tobacco, barrel char and pepper. It's all rye, but it's not too aggressive, just rich and full of character on the nose.
Taste:
Moderate mouthfeel with plenty going on. Cherry cola, barrel char, rye spice, pepper, some honey and toffee. There's rye spice, but it's nuanced and accompanied by a good deal of oak and barrel influence. Not too dry or bitter.
Finish:
Long finish. Impressively oaky without becoming bitter, rich with toffee, cocoa, barrel char, honey, toffee and cherry cola character. Fun stuff!
Overall:
This is a hefty rye and a fun one at that. It's distinctive, hard to place as similar to anything else I've had and is simply an easy drinker, easy to enjoy and easy to deep dive into. Cool stuff, JD.
