Flóki Sheep Dung Smoked Reserve is an Icelandic single malt made at Eimverk Distillery in Garðabær. It uses 100% Icelandic barley that is smoked over burning sheep dung, a traditional local method, and is aged in ex-Flóki Young Malt barrels as a single barrel release. It is bottled at 47% ABV and sells for around $65 to $100.
Curiously, the first impression on the palate is of a sugary chocolate espresso with a spicy clove boost. The coffee roast is a very noticeable sign (maybe the sheep drank a lot of it?), and pleasantly accompanies a warm dram with moist, mellow cereal compote, salted caramel, ripe fruit (banana, pear) and sliced ginger.
Medium body and prickly-creamy (Hah!) mouthfeel. Again the strangely sweet and green smoke, now mixed with lots of pepper (white, black, rosé and light chili).
This begs to be poured over ice cream; sweet malt and banoffee caramel spill over the taste buds with toasted almonds, ripe banana, and an edge of spice.
