Old Grand-Dad 114 Single Barrel 7-Year is the newest expression in the historic Old Grand-Dad bourbon lineup from the James B. Beam Distilling Co. The annual release builds on the brand's high-rye Kentucky straight bourbon profile with carefully selected single barrels aged seven years and bottled at 57% ABV, or 114 proof. First introduced in 1882, Old Grand-Dad has long been a favorite among bartenders and bourbon enthusiasts.

According to the producer, the bourbon features a deep copper color with aromas of caramel and vanilla, followed by notes of toffee and charred oak on the palate and a warm, velvety finish. Old Grand-Dad 114 Single Barrel 7-Year carries a suggested retail price of $49.99.

  • This new bourbon is proof that it deserves the love—it’s strong, of course, at 114 proof, but there is a lot of complexity on the palate, with notes of oak, honey-roasted peanuts, vanilla pudding, burnt caramel, ripe plum, and blackberries.

House Review
  • Nose:

    Bright, fresh and damn beautiful nose — orange sherbet, peaches and cream and candied ginger leap out of the glass, joined after further examination by crème brûlée, caramel, toffee, dark chocolate and a nice dusty oak note.

  • Taste:

    The palate brings a nice viscosity and a good bit of heat. It’s still fruity, but leaning more toward green apple on the palate than the orange note that was on the nose. That peach note is still here, but more of a peach candies vibe. The fruity profile is joined by a big hit of cinnamon and plenty of that signature nutty Beam funk and a bit of that dusty oak on the back palate.

  • Finish:

    The finish opens spicy and dry — big time cinnamon, nutmeg, plus a bit of anise, sassafras and chicory. From there, it hits you with a bit of oak before transitioning into a lovely profile of lavender, lemon and blueberry muffins.

  • Overall:

    A worthy addition to the already stellar Old Grand-Dad lineup, which is one of bourbon’s most underrated lines. At $50, this is delicious, and you can sip it neat or throw it in an elevated cocktail without feeling bad about it. This would be fantastic in an Old Fashioned.
