A man in China has lost his life after consuming one liter of high-proof alcohol in a drinking contest, which was organized by his boss during a team-building dinner in July, The Times of India reported Monday.

The competition reportedly involved consuming a liter of baijiu, a traditional white Chinese spirit ranging in proof from 80% to 120%. The man, identified as Zhang, accepted the challenge and proceeded to down the baijiu within 10 minutes, securing the promised cash prize of 20,000 yuan (approximately $2,741.19).

Following Zhang’s triumph, his boss, identified as Yang, escalated the stakes by encouraging others to surpass Zhang’s feat, offering a reward of 10,000 yuan ( around $1,370.67) for the winner. However, the losing participants would then need to pay 10,000 yuan and treat their colleagues to an afternoon meal.

Unexpectedly, Zhang’s rapid consumption of the baijiu had dire consequences. Shortly after finishing the bottle, he collapsed and was swiftly rushed to the hospital. According to reports, he was diagnosed with severe alcohol poisoning, aspiration pneumonia, suffocation and cardiac arrest. Despite medical efforts, Zhang passed away on August 3.

In the aftermath of this incident, the Shenzhen police initiated an investigation, and the company, in response, announced the closure of its operations via its official WeChat group, per The Times of India.

This incident is the latest in a series of similar events involving drinking competitions and their deadly consequences. In September, a 60-year-old man in India lost his life after accepting a friend’s challenge to drink 10 sachets of 90ml liquor within a span of just 30 minutes.

Earlier, in June, a Chinese influencer died after taking part in a drinking challenge in which he consumed large amounts of baijiu while live streaming.
