I Tasted the Malört Voodoo Ranger IPA So You Don’t Have To
In June, drinkers experienced a rush that can be summed up as 25% intrigued and 75% frightened when Voodoo Ranger — the IPA line from New Belgium that’s been so popular it has essentially become its own brand — announced a collaboration with Malört, the bitter wormwood liqueur used most often as a punishment for losers of a bet or bar game.
The two brands teamed up to release the Roulette IPA Pack, a 6-pack comprising four cans of standard Voodoo Ranger IPAs and two Malört-style IPAs brewed to capture that signature wormwood bitterness Malört is so infamous for. The catch? All six cans are completely identical; there’s no way of knowing which ones are Malört-style. The box does come with a spinner, of course, so you can let fate guide you.
Someone had to taste the Voodoo Ranger x Malört IPA, so we volunteered as tribute. We spun the spinner, and fate led us to a Malört-style IPA on the first try. Check out the video below to see our full reaction in live time to tasting — spoiler alert: The beer does indeed capture the essence of Malört. Mission accomplished.
