Sometimes divorce will make you want to drink — particularly in the case of an incident reported in The Times of Malta about a Vittoriosa woman who was convicted of stealing her ex-husband’s whisky collection, valued at €9,000 ($9,808). She took the case to the Court of Appeals, and the court upheld the conviction, ordering she return the whiskies to her former husband.

The duo owned a boutique hotel in Vittoriosa, and the theft occurred during their separation in 2020.

CCTV footage captured the wife and her new partner taking the bottles from her ex-husband’s collection, packing them in black garbage bags and leaving the premises with them.

The man used the footage to report his wife to local authorities and informed them he had been collecting the whisky bottles since he was 18.

As soon authorities discovered the woman co-owned the hotel with her former spouse, they dropped those charges due to the marital status of the couple and the fact that they were joint business owners. The husband gave authorities receipts of some bottles of the collection, which showed he bought the whiskies before they married. The woman claimed to authorities she “voluntarily returned” the whiskies, according to The Times of Malta. She additionally claimed to authorities that she suggested they split the whisky collection during the divorce.

Police pressed more serious charges against her, citing her as “guilty of disturbing her husband’s possession of goods,” according to the outlet. When she appealed the verdict, the judge upheld the conviction, claiming despite her marital and professional status, she had no right to take items from her former husband’s whisky collection.

Her partner was convicted and sentenced to prison.

In the court of appeals, the woman’s partner revealed she was his boss and he was following her orders to take the bottles. He was acquitted of the charges.
