On Thursday, The Macallan announced the second edition of The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey. This year’s release is part of a collaboration with the artist Michelle Lucking, and the whisky celebrates The River Spey, which flows through The Macallan’s property. The whisky hosts a suggested retail price of $275 and is available through The Macallan Estate Boutique and The Macallan Global Travel Retail Boutiques.
“The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey brings together our time-honored traditions and our continual inspiration from the nature that runs through The Macallan Estate and offers our community — at home and around the world – a unique insight into what makes our whiskies so exceptional through different aspects of our home,” The Macallan Whisky Maker Steven Bremner said in a news release.
The Speyside whisky brand refers to the river as “an enduring source of inspiration,” and tapped Lucking to design six paintings of the river in addition to bespoke packaging for the label which features a watercolor of The River Spey.
Lucking uses pastels as her primary medium of choice and specializes in seascapes. In 2017, the artist won the Annie Longley Award at The Pastel Society Exhibition in Britain. She describes water as a “constant source of inspiration” and is an avid swimmer and underwater photographer.
“Creating something of beauty, it takes patience,” Lucking said. “I like to recreate all that fine detail with natural pigmented pastels. Layering and layering, creating all the different blends of color, getting finer and finer so you end up with this incredible fine detail and that’s something you can never rush. A lot like creating whiskies here at The Macallan — it takes time.”
On Feb. 14, The Macallan announced it would be hosting Cirque du Soleil at the estate in celebration of its bicentennial. “Cirque du Soleil SPIRIT” will run from May 9 to May 31 Monday through Saturday evenings, and celebrates whisky’s relationship with the natural world in the Scottish highlands.
