On Jan. 5, the Daily Record reported a worker was caught on CCTV cameras taking limited-edition The Macallan “James Bond” scotch whiskies. The theft took place at a logistics warehouse in Eurocentral, Scotland.
Allan Scott, a 38-year-old forklift engineer, was spotted on security footage swiping the whisky from the site. Work staff confronted him in the loading bay after finding The Macallan Harmony whisky hidden behind a bin. The authorities were called, and Scott admitted to swiping three cases of Macallan whisky, according to the Daily Record.
“I took the James Bond whisky,” Scott said, per the Daily Record. “I was getting £4k ($5,096) a crate.”
The Macallan’s James Bond Series hit the auction block in September and was projected to fetch a price of over $70,000.
Scott admitted to stealing the bottles between October and December of 2022.
The sheriff ordered Scott to pay £20,000 ($25,475) to logistics, perform 300 hours of unpaid labor, wear an electric monitor for nine months and be placed under supervision for 36 months.
The prosecutor claimed the value of the James Bond whisky was £20,000, and it was recovered.
“He knows this is a serious breach of trust and he took advantage of that trust and stole goods of a high value of £20,000,” said Jim O’Dowd, the defense attorney for Allan Scott. “Financial difficulties were the main reason for this course of conduct and he took advantage of the situation he found himself in.”
According to Glassdoor, the average hourly pay for a forklift operator at GXO Logistics is between $18 and $24 an hour. Home.co UK cites the average cost of renting a home in Lanarkshire as $1,353 per month. If Scott were to receive the lower end of that hourly rate, he would be left with the equivalent of $1,527 for regular living expenses.
Cost of living issues due to inflation are a growing problem worldwide — including in the United Kingdom.
On Dec. 15, Chivas Regal narrowly averted a strike action after agreeing to adjust wages to keep pace with inflation in the United Kingdom.
