‘A Beautifully Enriching Experience’: The Glenrothes Unveils Yacht Decanter for a Spiffy Way to Enjoy Scotch Whisky at Sea

On Wednesday, Denzeen reported that the whiskymakers at The Glenrothes have devised a pretty spiffy-looking way to enjoy their scotch at sea — with a yacht decanter that is over a meter tall.

The Speyside distillery tapped London designer Studio Indigo and Master Craftsmen from Little Halstock to create a “Philos,” a  mechanized maritime-inspired gimbal decanter that houses 44-year-old whisky from 1969.

“Overall, our aim was to create a world-first across yachting, whisky and design through a decanter that protects every drop of this precious liquid and a beautifully enriching experience,” Head of Creative at The Glenrothes Anna Lisa Stone said according to Denzine.

Stone initiated the project for the decanter and tapped the talents of designers at Studio Indigo, a luxury London-based interior designer and Dorset-based Master Craftsmen at Little Halstock.

The whisky was pulled from a single cask filled in 1969 at The Glenrothes. We have reviewed a 14-year single-cask expression from the distillery quite favorably and gave it an 8 at Whiskey Raiders. A full review can be found here.

For Philos, the scotch whisky is housed in a reloadable decanter and mounted within three rings which allows it to move with the ocean waves. An aluminum globe of six interlocking leaves protects the whisky.

The globe is locked in at a 23.5-degree angle, which mimics the earth’s rotation axis.

A mechanical “pouring sequence” draws the whisky from the decanter due to hidden cogs, and Phylos dispenses a 50 ml pour each time.

“Even though Philos is rooted in history, we wanted the piece to have a contemporary feel,” designers Olga Fox and Lyne Arbid said. “This meant a desire to stay away from the traditional woods and brass typical of historic armillary spheres. Instead, the mix of contemporary materials in cool steel tones embody the future of craft.”
