On Wednesday, Tamdhu announced the third launch of its limited-edition release, Quercus Alba Distinction III. The whisky is an homage to first-fill American oak Oloroso sherry casks.
Quercus alba is the scientific name for White Oak, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. This expression of Tamdhu is aged in white oak harvested from the forests of North America. The oak is then imported into Spain, where the staves air-dry in the Mediterranean climate.
The barrels are toasted and Oloroso sherry-seasoned before voyaging to Speyside.
“This series truly celebrates the very best in American Oak Oloroso Sherry casks and we’re excited to release the third expression in this collection,” Tamdhu Distillery Manager Sandy McIntyre said in a news release.
Bottled at 48% ABV, this whisky is available for purchase in the U.K., U.S., Australia, Germany, China and the Netherlands at a suggested retail price of $85.
White oak is the most common wood of choice for aging whisky. Because so much oak is used, the whiskey world could face a shortage.
On Sept. 21, the U.S. House of Representatives introduced a bill with bipartisan backing meant to preserve the future of American White Oak, and it received co-sponsorship from the Congressional White Oak Caucus and Congressional Bourbon Caucus.
Due to the rampant popularity of the oak species on a global scale, a Quercus alba shortage could occur if action is not taken.
