On Friday, The Whisky Shop unveiled a rare, 73-year-old single malt scotch whisky from The Macallan, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2024.

The whisky is priced at £77,000 ($97,505) from The Whisky Shop. A ballot for the purchase opened Tuesday and closes at noon on Thursday. Entry requires a £5,000 ($6,332) deposit.

Tales of The Macallan: Volume II commemorates the brand’s founder, Alexander Reid, who established the Speyside distillery in 1824.

“Displaying beautiful tones of bronzed oak, and subtle red hues that reflect the original meaning of Alexander Reid’s surname in Scots – The Red One – this rare and unique single malt whisky possesses an incredible complexity achieved through age and patient maturation,” Euan Kennedy, lead whisky maker for The Macallan, said, according to The Whisky Shop. “Enjoying a lingering smokiness redolent of whiskies of Alexander’s time, it is a fitting tribute to his living legacy as we celebrate our 200th anniversary year.”

Tales of The Macallan: Volume II was distilled in 1949 and bottled in 2022. Only 334 decanters of the 73-year-old whisky are available. The decanters were crafted by the French crystal maker, Lalique.

The decanter of whisky is housed in an 800-page book featuring illustrations by the British artist Andrew Davidson. The book was bound by the London-based Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf. The creation of the Tales of The Macallan Volume II book “demanded extraordinary technical expertise to conceal the decanter within its 800 pages,” according to The Whisky Shop.

Imprimerie du Marais, an Artisan printer in Paris, printed the pages of the book.
