Just 190 Bottles of The Macallan From a Cask of ‘Unparalleled Rarity’ are Available For Nearly $5,000 Each

The Macallan

On Monday, the Scotland-based whisky company Caskshare announced a limited run of 190 bottles of The Macallan from 1991 would go up for sale via ballot for $4,250 a bottle. The ballot will open internationally on Dec. 7 and run through Dec. 14.

The bottles fall under Caskshare’s Collective Series Label, and members will have first access to the bottles. The whisky was distilled at The Macallan, aged in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. The whisky will be drawn from the cask and bottled in January at 49% ABV.

“We are honored to be able to bring you this very rare whisky from one of Scotland’s best-known distilleries,” John Robertson, the managing director of Caskshare, said in a news release. “… It’s a rare and momentous occasion when a cask of such unparalleled rarity emerges. We’ve coupled this whisky with an exceptional piece of art and anticipate that it will eagerly be sought after by both discerning connoisseurs and fervent collectors alike.”

The artwork featured on the bottles is from the American artist Tristan Eaton.

“Drawing inspiration from two of Eaton’s evocative murals paying homage to Alexander Graham Bell — the Scottish-born inventor of the telephone and the American Telecoms Company — we felt that this was the perfect partner to beautifully showcase the intricate interplay between Scottish innovation and American artistic ingenuity as we launch the Collective Series here in the U.S.,” Robertson said.

Caskshare was founded in 2019 and is a whisky business that claims it focuses on making the world of “unique, one-of-a-kind whiskies accessible to all” and “bridging the gap between whisky aficionados and exceptional single malt experiences.”

Is 2023 the Year of The Macallan?

It seems like The Macallan is the scotch brand on everyone’s lips of late.

The Speyside brand made global headlines when a bottle of whisky distilled in 1926 known as “The Adami Bottle,” sold for $2.7 million at auction, breaking records for the most expensive spirit ever sold.

It was described as a whisky “every auctioneer wants to sell and every collector wants to own,” by Sotheby’s Global Head of Spirits, Johnny Fowle, and featured artwork from the Italian painter, Valerio Adami.

Other Macallan releases from 2023 include a Day of the Dead-themed whisky, a collaboration with Mary and Stella McCartney, a collection of scotches ranging from 12 to 30 years old, a coffee-inspired whisky and a 77-year-old whisky priced at nearly $100,000.

The Macallan also opened a brick-and-mortar store in the Tocumen International Airport in Panama.

It was a busy year for Macallan bottlings at auction, as well. A six-bottle collection sold for upwards of $600,000 in London, while a single bottle went for $250,000 in New York.
