Scotch aficionado and kilt enthusiast King Charles III visited the Highland Games and enjoyed a small tipple while serving as chieftain of the games, The Independent reported Sunday.

He was photographed in John O’Groats, Scotland, seated at the front row enjoying his whiskey as he watched competitors play tug of war and perform a caber toss, a game where participants toss a large tapered pole across a field.

The 74-year-old found himself in the John O’Groats village after touring the small family-owned 8 Doors Distillery, owned by Kerry and Derek Campbell. The monarch was chosen to open the doors to the facilities and is set to present both owners with a bespoke commemorative plaque in the coming months.

While at 8 Doors Distillery, King Charles filled an American oak Pedro Ximenez sherry hogshead cask before tasting through the distillery’s portfolio.

King Charles was gifted a sword, scepter and crown called the Honors of Scotland at a coronation service in July prior to the festivities of this month.

The Highland Games are considered one of Scotland’s “biggest cultural exports” and date back to the 11th century, according to The Scotsman. They were initially a form of “war games,” and only the strongest and most courageous soldiers would win.

In addition to showcasing the strength of the country’s bravest warriors, musicians and dancers were also celebrated.

King Charles became chieftain of the Highland Games in 2002 according to People Magazine, following his mother’s legacy.

The monarch spent most of his time at the Castle of Mey in Caithness during this month’s trip. The historic castle was the home of the Queen Mum, his grandmother.

At the games, King Charles appeared in good spirits, shaking hands and waving at the crowd while sipping his Scotch. According to the Belfast Telegraph, the monarch enjoys single malt scotch and is very partial to Laphroaig. When he wants to shake things up, King Charles is known to enjoy gin as well, favoring classic gin and vermouth Martinis.
