Scotch whisky brand Dewar’s announced the release of its oldest whisky to date, Dewar’s Double Double 37 Year Old, on Monday. The expression hosts a suggested retail price of $1,799 for a 375-milliliter bottle presented with a set of distinctive tumblers. The Double Double 37 Year Old is the inaugural launch as part of the Collector’s Series.
The Double Double 37 Year Old is a blend of single malts finished in Oloroso sherry casks that once aged Aultmore Single Malt, according to Dewar’s. The whisky was non-chill filtered and bottled at 48% ABV.
Dewar’s describes the Double Double 37-Year-Old as possessing a profile that is “rich” and hosts baking spice notes of cinnamon, honey and vanilla, with a finish that is almost decadent.
“The team and I are driven by creating new and exciting whiskies – interesting flavors and experiences that make our loyal drinkers excited for what we might come up with next,” Dewar’s Master Blender Stephanie Macleod said in a news release. “With the Collector’s Series we wanted to take our award-winning Double Double series to the next level with a set of blended malts and, with this first expression, to pay homage to the style of a specific Scotch whisky region, all in one bottle.”
Dewar’s plans to present the whiskies in The Collector’s Series on a yearly basis. The second is slated to launch in 2024, and the whiskies will be released through 2026.
The brand’s Double Double series hosts a four-step aging process for smoothness and decadence. First, the brand ages single grains and single malts separately. Then, it ages blended grains and blended malts as part of the second step. The third step involves aging blended grains and malts together prior to finishing the whisky in Oloroso sherry casks. Within the Double Double portfolio are 21-, 27- and 32-year-old whiskies. The 21-year-old expression — which we’ve reviewed here — was aged in Oloroso sherry casks, and bottled in a 375-milliliter format.
In June, Dewar’s released a limited-edition whisky in honor of the 123rd U.S. Open, which was aged in red wine casks from Napa Valley.
Macleod expressed enthusiasm for the Collector’s Series, particular with this first expression:
“We’re excited to hear what our whisky connoisseurs think, and to reveal more about the rest of the collection in due course.”
