On Monday, The Spirits Business reported that Benriach, the 126-year-old Scottish distillery, is expanding its scotch collection with a 50-year-old bottling, its oldest to date.
Limited to just 37 bottles worldwide — five of which have been reserved for global travel retail channels — the spirit promises to elevate Benriach’s already stacked catalog of ultra-aged whiskies. The unpeated scotch was barreled in ex-bourbon casks on Sept. 21, 1966. Decades later, it’s been bottled for select consumers at 44.5%-ABV.
“It is the finest portrayal of Benriach’s fruit-laden style, with unrivaled complexity and luxurious refinement,” Brown-Forman Marketing Director of GTR Stéphane Morizet said, according to The Spirits Business. “The GTR allocation underscores the importance of this market to Brown-Forman and highlights our commitment to delivering exceptional luxury editions to travelers.”
Retailing now for £25,000 ($31,393), the spirit is said to contain aromas of oak, chestnut, Maraschino cherry and gentle acacia honey. On the palate, flavors of honeyed dates, spices, lingering apple and pear.
Headed up by master distiller Rachel Barrie, Benriach dates back to 1898 in Speyside, Scotland. Ownership of the centuries-old distillery has changed hands frequently over the years, bouncing between Seagrams, Pernod Ricard and finally to its current owner Brown-Forman in 2016.
Since its latest acquisition, the brand has grown fond of travel exclusive releases, debuting Benriach Triple Distilled 25 Years Old, Triple Distilled 10 Years Old, Quarter Cask and Smoky Quarter Cask all through GTR. Other recent releases have included the bourbon, sherry and virgin oak-aged Benriach The Sixteen and the $4,500 Benriach The Forty (now its second-oldest expression on the books).
