The Balvenie announced on Oct. 1 that the luxury scotch brand is bringing back its beloved Single Barrel 12 Year Old scotch whisky. The whisky was discontinued after nearly a decade because the Speyside whisky brand had a shortage of whisky in its stocks. Due to a happy discovery of “exceptional liquid,” the Balvenie can bring it back.

This 12-year-old scotch whisky hosts a suggested retail price of $79.99, and each barrel yields 300 bottles.

“Part of the beauty of whisky making is that no two casks are quite the same, and I am immensely proud that we can reintroduce the Single Barrel 12 Year Old,” Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie said in a news release. “The fact that we’re able to create this expression is a testament to the vast selection of quality casks in our warehouse and the care that has been taken to ensure trust in our liquid, our barrels, and our approach to whisky making. The single barrel bottling allows us to celebrate the character of our house style and those bottlings embody who we are at The Balvenie.”

The Balvenie shared its Single Barrel range initially launched in 2013 and was meant to showcase the brand’s “signature honeyed house style.” It was discontinued in 2022.

Balvenie shares that its Single Barrel 12 Year Old possesses a nose of subtle spice, sweet toffee, vanilla and honey. The palate continues that honey throughline with citrus, fruit and spice. The finish goes on for eons, with more honey and a kiss of citrus.

This latest release follows one of the more opulent releases from The Balvenie, which dropped on Aug. 8. The whisky was the first scotch within The Balvenie’s Fifty Collection, and it featured a 14-karat gold-plated display and a $53,000 price tag.

This scotch brand’s Single Barrel 12 Year Old is undoubtedly more affordable than its luxurious predecessor, despite the limited nature of the release.

“Single Barrel 12 Year Old gained a loyal following when first introduced, cherished for its honeyed sweetness that is quintessentially The Balvenie, and rich fruity notes that immediately take center stage,” U.S. Brand Ambassador Naomi Leslie said.”David Stewart, Kelsey’s predecessor and the man who helped shape The Balvenie as we know it, always believed American oak perfectly showcased our distinct distillery flavor. The Single Barrel 12 Year Old embodies that philosophy perfectly, and we can’t wait to share it with consumers once again.”
