On Wednesday, Aberfeldy announced the launch of a 25-year-old single malt in celebration of its 125th anniversary. According to the brand, the whisky was finished in first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks.

The expression hosts a 46% ABV and is bottled in a collector’s pack to celebrate Aberfeldy’s latest milestone.

The Highland scotch brand claims the 25-year-old expression hosts qualities typical of its “signature soft, honeyed waxy character, augmented by a finish in first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks.”

“The walls of our charming distillery are steeped in history and heritage, standing testament to a tradition of whisky making stretching back over generations,” Bacardi Director of Blending, Scotch Whisky Stephanie Macleod said  in a news release. “Together with the distillery team led by Distillery Manager, John MacKenzie, and a team of talented Blenders, we have the honor of balancing past, present and future in every bottle of Aberfeldy to create the consistent premium quality and taste people enjoy around the world.”

Aberfeldy was founded in 1898 by John Alexander Dewar.

If the name rings a bell, that’s because the whisky entrepreneur also founded Dewar’s Blended Scotch Whisky.

“John Alexander was at the peak of his whisky-making career when he founded [Aberfeldy] and he would have had his choice of some of the best locations in the Highlands,” said Jacqui Seargeant, Bacardi’s heritage manager of the storied scotch brand’s history. “Out of all of those, he chose Aberfeldy, a location that had all the ingredients to make a superior Highland single malt, notably a superior natural water source through the gold-rich Pitilie Bur, which runs right past the distillery. And there was likely a sentimental reason too, a homecoming of sorts, being just three miles from where his father was born and the family’s whisky legacy began.”

The distillery claims that it has made great strides in sustainability, and reducing its carbon footprint by 90% since the installation of a biomass boiler in 2015. Aberfeldy claims it has improved water efficiency by over 30% since implementing the boiler in the distillation process during the last 15 years.

“Aberfeldy is truly at the heart of Scotland and, as soon as you arrive, it’s easy to see why John Alexander Dewar chose this area to build his first and only distillery,” Macleod concluded.

The Aberfeldy 25 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 125th Anniversary Limited Edition expression can be purchased from ReserveBar, with a starting price of $500.
