Every week, The Daily Pour staff highlights a standout sip that left the biggest impression — the pour that made us pause, swirl and smile. This week’s pick comes from Islay, Scotland, and it’s not what you’d expect.

Bruichladdich, best known for its progressive approach to Scotch whisky, has ventured into new territory with The Laddie Rye 7 Year Old — a whisky made from 55% Islay-grown rye and 45% Islay-grown malted barley. It’s a bold move for a distillery and country rooted in barley traditions, and the result is something truly distinctive.

Aged for seven years in a mix of first-fill bourbon and virgin American oak casks (some toasted) this whisky showcases the influence of both. The toasted American oak imparts gentle layers of caramel, coconut and vanilla without overwhelming the grain character. The whisky was distilled, matured and bottled entirely on Islay, with ingredients sourced from 15 local farms. Bottled at 100 proof and priced at $59.99, it’s a U.S.-exclusive release.

On the nose, The Laddie Rye bridges two worlds: it’s part rye, part scotch — honeyed, buttery, and laced with cinnamon and pepper. The palate delivers a warm, comforting mix of baked bread, honey and vanilla, supported by soft spice and a nutty richness reminiscent of walnuts and cashews. The finish lingers with pepper, cinnamon, and chocolate-covered walnuts, leaving a lasting impression of balance and restraint.

Rye whisky may be a rarity in Scotland, but Bruichladdich’s take feels both innovative and familiar — a sweet-spiced hybrid that nods to American rye traditions while staying unmistakably Scotland at heart.
