Old Overholt Unveils Decade-Old Cask-Strength Rye Whiskey Aged in a Distinctive Type of Rickhouse

Old Overholt announced the release of a 10-year-old, cask-strength rye whiskey on Monday. The whiskey is slated to be released in limited quantities with a suggested retail price of $100.
According to the brand, Old Overholt Extra Aged Cask Strength Rye was aged in a distinctive “escalator-style” warehouse before it was bottled at cask strength and unfiltered.
This expression was barreled in 2012, during the Winter and Autumn, according to the brand. It rested in the brand’s “escalator warehouse,” in Clermont Kentucky for a decade and was bottled at 121 proof.
An escalator-style rickhouse uses escalators to move the barrels around as they age, according to Distillery Trail.
Old Overholt is owned by Beam Suntory, and the brand claims it is the oldest continuously maintained whiskey brand in America.
According to VinePair, Old Overholt — which has a heavy focus on rye whiskey — was one of the few to emerge from Prohibition relatively unscathed.
The outlet attributed this partially due to the fact that the banking tycoon, Andrew Mellon as the majority owner of the brand at the time, and also was U.S. Secretary of Treasury under President Harding.
During “the noble experiment,” the brand was allowed to distill “medicinal” Bottled in Bond whiskey.
Though rye whiskey had admittedly fallen out of favor in the 1980s and ’90s, many bartenders attest that a “rye renaissance” of sorts is happening.
