Buffalo Trace Rolls Out Higher-Proof Version of Classic Sazerac Rye Whiskey

On Monday, Buffalo Trace Distillery introduced Sazerac Rye Whiskey 100 Proof, a new, higher-proof version of its popular rye whiskey, which has traditionally been proofed at 90. The new version is now available to retailers, bars and restaurants in select U.S. markets at a suggested retail price of $29.99 per 1-liter bottle.

Buffalo Trace says the new 100-proof expression was developed in response to requests from bartenders and whiskey enthusiasts and is designed to offer a richer, more balanced flavor profile in cocktails. Buffalo Trace says product maintains the familiar spicy, peppery and dry profile of Sazerac Rye while delivering amplified aromas of clove, vanilla, anise and pepper, along with subtle hints of candied spices and citrus.

“As the whiskey of America’s first cocktail, Sazerac Rye has played a central role in rye whiskey’s resurgence,” Buffalo Trace Global Brand Director Andrew Duncan said in a news release. “Bartenders have increasingly embraced 100 proof ryes for the balance, strength and versatility they provide. Sazerac Rye 100 Proof offers greater control over flavor and balance, empowering creativity behind the bar. It’s built to be the perfect cocktail whiskey.”

Buffalo Trace emphasizes that the development process focused on ensuring that the elevated proof enhances rather than overwhelms the whiskey’s signature characteristics. The stronger formulation is intended to give bartenders greater control over cocktail flavor and balance, especially in drinks like the Sazerac and Manhattan.

“Sazerac Rye 100 Proof was crafted specifically with bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts in mind,” Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley said. “With the renewed interest in classic cocktails that rely on a rye whiskey base, we focused on ensuring this higher-proof spirit delivers complexity and structure without losing its signature profile. In addition to being sold through traditional retail channels, Sazerac Rye Whiskey 100 Proof has been incorporated into the Sazerac Barrel Select program. This program allows select accounts to hand-pick their own barrel, with the first 100 on-premise accounts receiving a commemorative barrelhead.
