On Tuesday, The Spirits Business reported that The Whisky Exchange unveiled Yellow Spot 1999, a limited-edition 23-year-old Irish whiskey. Just 564 bottles are available, and the whiskey is set to sell for the suggested retail price of £525 ($668).

Yellow Spot 1999 was aged in ex-bourbon barrels before being moved to an ex-Malaga cask. Malaga is a type of fortified wine that originates from Spain and is typically made with a mixture of Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grapes.

“More than two decades in wood has allowed the pot still spirit to develop a fruity character while mellowing its characteristic spiciness, with time finishing in a single Malaga cask adding layers of extra complexity,” The Whisky Exchange brand ambassador Billy Abbott said, according to The Spirits Business.

The Spot Whiskey brand hosts a history that dates to the early 20th century. Spot Whiskey is produced by Mitchell & Son, a Dublin wine merchant and bonder of Irish whiskey. Because the Mitchells worked extensively with fortified wine casks, they had a plentiful supply for maturing whiskey.

The whiskeys were marked with a spot of paint, according to the brand, to signify how long the barrels of whiskey had been aging in their underground cellars. Blue represented 7 years, while Green meant 10,  Yellow 12 and Red 15.

The single pot still Irish whiskey is made from a mixture of malted and unmalted barley, according to Spot Whiskey.

In September 2021, The Whisky Exchange was acquired by the major spirits producer, Pernod Ricard. It was a ground-breaking moment for the spirits industry, as until that point a spirits retailer had never been acquired by a major alcohol producer.
