Teeling announced on Wednesday the release of a collaborative bottling between the Irish whiskey brand and the University of Notre Dame‘s athletics department. The Notre Dame-branded release honors their shared heritage and Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish.
The whiskey comes with football season just around the corner. The Irish whiskey inside the commemorative bottle is standard Teeling Small Batch, which spends up to six years aging in ex-bourbon casks and an additional six months in rum casks and hosts a 46% ABV.
Teeling x Notre Dame Limited Edition Small Batch Whiskey has a suggested retail price of $34.99 and is available now on shelves across the U.S.
This limited release follows Teeling’s May release of the brand’s Wonders of Wood Series, and the expression spent time aging in virgin Swedish oak. Teeling claimed that Swedish oak is exceptionally rare and said the distinctive choice of finish added crystalized ginger and almond components to the whiskey. That expression was the latest in the Wonders of Wood Series, following whiskeys aged in Portuguese oak virgin Chinkapin oak.
The spirits giant, Bacardi, owns 79% of the shares of Teeling. It gained majority control in December, six years after first investing in the brand. In April, the Irish Times reported it has the option to acquire the brand’s remaining shares for $31.9 million.
Whether or not Bacardi will snap up what remains of Teeling Irish Whiskey and own the brand outright remains unclear.
