On Thursday, Irish whiskey producer Teeling released the second expression in its Wonders of Wood series of pot still whiskeys.
Teeling Wonders of Wood Virgin Portuguese Oak is made from a mashbill of 50% malted barley and 50% unmalted barley. The whiskey was triple-distilled in Dublin and matured in virgin Portuguese oak barrels. Per Teeling, Portuguese oak is higher in tannin content than typical oak used for aging whiskey.
“Wood is an amazing, sustainable and environmentally friendly material that plays a huge role in developing the flavour and character of a whiskey as it matures,” Jack Teeling, founder and managing director of Teeling Whiskey, said in a news release. “We are truly in wonder of the role wood has in crafting our Teeling Whiskeys as well as its impact on the wider environment, so as part of our new series we wanted to do our part in helping the replanting of our native Irish forests.
“Single Pot Still is uniquely Irish and is perhaps the fastest growing style of Irish whiskey in the world. Teeling Whiskey is very proud to be at the forefront of expanding the offering within this unique category of Irish whiskey and helping it evolve through world class releases such as our Wonders of Wood series.”
Bottled at 100 proof, Teeling Wonders of Wood Virgin Portuguese Oak is available at a suggested retail price of $99.99.
Teeling’s Wonders of Wood releases are in collaboration with the Tree Council of Ireland, whose reforestation efforts Teeling is working to help with. Proeeds from the first Wonders of Wood release allowed for an acre of oak trees to be planted in the Glencree region of Count Wicklow, near Dublin. The second release will allow for an acre to be planted in County Dublin.
