Former super-middleweight boxing champion Carl Froch is known for taking the occasional verbal or online jab at Conor McGregor, who often responds with his own disparaging remarks.
McGregor once said he could beat Froch and ex-boxer George Groves in a two-on-one MMA match, and Froch responded that he alone would “smash” McGregor in a fight. This time, Froch is taking his comments about McGregor out of the ring, bringing the champ’s Irish whiskey brand, Proper No. Twelve, into question.
“He’s made himself a fortune,” Froch said in an interview with BettingSites.co.uk. “I’ve got a lot of admiration for him. Now, if you can blow that much money – whatever McGregor’s got, if he’s blowing it and spending it and buying Lamborghini boats and being frivolous with it by gambling, I hope he isn’t.
“He’s earned his money the hardest way. He’s got his whiskey brand too, but everyone says that whiskey tastes like proper s**t by the way.”
Does Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey Taste Like ‘Proper S—‘?
So, is what Froch heard accurate? We reviewed Proper No. Twelve and certainly walked away unimpressed.
We wouldn’t say, however, that it tastes horrible, per se. It’s really just entirely unremarkable. Bottled at the minimum proof of 80, Proper No. Twelve is a thin, young, sweet whiskey. We wouldn’t drink it by choice because it’s a dull sipper that won’t excite any whiskey fan. But it certainly doesn’t taste “like proper s—.” That description makes it sound disgusting, while it really just tastes like mediocre Irish whiskey.
We wouldn’t spit it out, but we also wouldn’t choose to buy it or drink it.
Proper No. Twelve released its second product, Proper No. Twelve Irish Apple Flavored Whiskey, in February. The flavored whiskey is more memorable than the original Proper No. Twelve but still far from great.
During the interview, Froch also couldn’t resist bringing up his opinion that he could still take McGregor in a fight.
“Conor McGregor was talking s**t, wasn’t he? Talking nonsense about me and piping up,” Froch said, per BettingSites.co.uk. “Then I think he realised that if he takes me on in my discipline in boxing, it’s going to be even worse than what happened to him when he fought Floyd Mayweather.
“Mayweather is a quality fighter, but he’s small, he’s a light boxer. I’m quite heavy and I’m even heavier now. I’ve been retired for nine years and I keep myself in shape. So I think he realises that you don’t want to be getting in the boxing ring with me, which is fair enough.”
McGregor fought Floyd Mayweather in August 2017 in a boxing match that drew the second-highest pay-per-view buy rate in history. Mayweather defeated McGregor by technical knockout in the 10th round, maintaining his perfect record and moving to 50-0 on his career.
