One of Texas’ Best Distilleries Is Selling $1 Whiskey to Prove Great Bourbon Doesn’t Just Come From Kentucky

Still Austin Whiskey Co. is one of Texas’ best distilleries, but the brand isn’t satisfied with just coming out on top against its in-state competitors. Still Austin is throwing down the gauntlet and challenging those who believe great bourbon can only come from Kentucky.
“We’re deeply grateful to Kentucky for inventing the stuff, but after 200 years of the same old bourbon, people want something new,” Still Austin CEO and Co-Founder Chris Seals said in a news release. “The idea that great bourbon can only come from Kentucky is a myth based on decades of misinformation. We’re inviting everyone still holding onto this old guard notion to ‘Kentucky Fill Up’ to experience the difference for themselves.”
On Nov. 23 (which is also the day the distillery’s local university, Texas, faces off against Kentucky in football — “proving, yet again, Texas’ superiority” — says Still Austin), Still Austin will host “Kentucky Fill Up Day.”
Here’s how it works: The first 500 people to show up to the distillery on the 23rd with an empty bottle of Kentucky bourbon will get that bottle filled with Still Austin’s Cask Strength Bourbon — for just $1. On top of that, Still will reseal and relabel each bottle with its own labels.
Still Austin Cask Strength Bourbon regularly sells for $60, so $1 is a quite a discount — a 98.33% one, to be precise. Plus, Still Austin Cask Strength Bourbon is a great whiskey that has earned a very respectable Raided Score® of 89 based on the reviews of six spirits critics. To be eligible for a refill, bottles must be clean and intact with their original cap, have contained bourbon from a Kentucky Distillery and be 750-milliliter bottles. To pre-purchase $1 tickets (offer limited to first 500), click here.
“Kentucky may have invented it, but Still Austin has perfected it,” Still Austin quipped in an email. “Honest question: why does it take Kentucky 10 years to make a decent bourbon when Texas can do it in 3?” the brand added in a nod to Texas’ harsh climate.
In addition to the filling up of bottles, Still Austin will host a watch party for the game at its South Austin distillery beginning at 2:30 p.m. The distillery will serve up Frozen Texas Julep cocktails and Texas fried chicken, host an armadillo derby race and giveaways, sell exclusive merchandise and more.
Still Austin is located at 440 E. St. Elmo Road Suite F in Austin.
