Derek Jeter’s Bespoken Spirits announced on Friday that the brand is joining forces with the artists Harold Perrineau, Malcolm D. Lee, Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs to launch a new whiskey brand: Sable Bourbon.
Perineau, Chestnut and Diggs starred in the 1990s romantic comedy “The Best Man,” directed by Malcolm D. Lee. Friends and bourbon lovers, the group set out to create a “beautifully rich bourbon,” according to Bespoken. They chose the name “Sable,” which means “black,” to celebrate the depth and complexity of the bourbon.
“Creating Sable has been a journey and celebration of our long-lasting friendship,” Diggs said in a news release. “Each bottle tells a story, and we can’t wait for people to share in those stories as they enjoy our bourbon.”
The group shared that they spent years working with Bespoken’s team to perfect the liquid, which comes from a mashbill of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley.
Sable clocks in at 94 proof and hosts aromas of “burnt sugar, pear compote, allspice and nutty marzipan,” according to Bespoken, which adds that the palate is full of dark chocolate fudge and mocha, which segue into an oaky spicy finish. Sable Bourbon hosts a suggested retail price of $59.99 for a 750-milliliter bottle and is available throughout the U.S. at select retailers. The bourbon is launching on the 25th anniversary of the 1999 debut of “The Best Man,” and Bespoken says it serves as a testament to the film’s relevance and the enduring friendship between the artists who collaborated on it.
In “The Best Man,” Diggs portrays the role of an author and bachelor named Harper. Harper is about to publish a best-selling novel chronicling his exploits and the lives of his close group of friends. When he arrives at the wedding of his best friend, Lance — played by Chestnut — he must find a way to keep his book a secret. The artists have remained friends after the film’s debut, and shared that Sable is meant to celebrate their long standing relationship.
“We want every sip of Sable to feel like our friendship,” Perrineau expressed. “We’ve spent 25 years crafting an unbreakable bond, and now, with Sable, we get to share that feeling with others.”
