In May, the Lexington, Kentucky based whiskey brand, RD1 Spirits, unveiled its latest product: a bourbon flight experience with a suggested retail price of $79.99. The bourbon flight features three 200-milliliter bottles of Kentucky Straight Bourbon, each with a distinctive finish. One of the bourbons is finished in the trending yet heavily polarizing Amburana wood.

“Our new wood-finished bourbon flight is as close you can get to the RD1 Tasting Room without being in Lexington,” RD1 Spirits CEO Mike Tetterton said in a news release. “Exploring the distinct aroma, taste and finish of each expression makes for a thoughtful bourbon gift or an eye-opening taste at home. It’s classic Kentucky Straight Bourbon meets ‘what’s next.'”

The flight comprises RD1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished With French Oak (101 proof), RD1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished With Brazilian Amburana Wood (110 proof) and RD1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Double Finished In Oak And Maple Barrels (99.9 proof).

The bourbons are aged for a minimum of four years, and RD1 claims it removes the bungs of specific barrels then adds distinctive wood staves into the American Oak barrel. It hammers a new bung in its place, then lets the bourbon finish for an undisclosed period of time.

RD1 shares this flight experience can be purchased at the brand’s tasting room, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, specific retailers in the U.S. or at the brand’s website. RD1 also recommends downloading a guided tasting video, so those who purchase a set can learn more about each expression.

The brand broke ground in January on a $4.8 million Kentucky Distillery, which was designed to more than double the brand’s capacity in respect to its current facilities.

“We want RD1 Distillery at The Commons to serve as a cornerstone of education, exploration and entertainment in Lexington,” Tetterton said. “As a brand founded by Lexington entrepreneurs, we are motivated by the bourbon giants of our past and look to honor them with bourbon growth right here in our hometown.”
