Old Forester’s Latest Bourbon is 10 Years Old and Made From a New Grain Recipe

On Wednesday, Old Forester announced the fifth release in its Whiskey Row Series: 1924.
This new, nationally available bourbon is significant for two main reasons. First, at 10 years old, it bears the highest age statement of the Whiskey Row Series. Second, it is distilled from a mashbill that’s new to Old Forester. The Louisville, Kentucky distillery usually makes its whiskeys from 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley, but 1924 features a new recipe: 79% corn, 11% rye and 10% malted barley.
The name and new mashbill of Old Forester 1924 are a nod to a moment in the 153-year-old brand’s history, which, as you may have guessed, occurred in 1924.
In 1924, the U.S. was four years deep into Prohibition. Old Forester, which is the only bourbon brand produced before, during and after Prohibition, was still operating after the federal government granted it a permit to bottle its existing whiskey stocks as medicine.
In 1924, Old Forester acquired barrels of whiskey from distillers that had been forced to close with the arrival of Prohibition. These whiskeys featured different mashbills, but Old Forester bottled them as Old Forester bourbon nonetheless.
“We are honored to commemorate this historical milestone with a new featured mash bill and a beautiful 10-year age statement,” Old Forester Master Taster Melissa Rift said in a news release. “It allows whisky lovers to taste just how dynamic our brand can be while staying rooted in our rich history.”
Bottled at 100 proof, Old Forester 1924 is available across the U.S. at select retailers and Old Forester Distilling Co. at a suggested retail price of $115.
Old Forester 1924 is the fifth installment in the Whiskey Row series, following 1870 Original Batch, 1897 Bottled in Bond, 1910 Old Fine Whisky and 1920 Prohibition Style. Each expression is named for a moment in Old Forester’s history.
