Michter’s Just Dropped a Never-Before-Seen Whiskey

Bomberger's

Michter’s announced on Tuesday the release of a brand-new whiskey under the acclaimed brand’s lesser-known Bomberger’s label: Bomberger’s PFG (Precision Fine Grain). The whiskey has a suggested price of $140 per 750-milliliter bottle.

“Over the years, our flagship Bomberger’s Declaration Bourbon has always had a rich, bold nature that I love,” said Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee in a statement from the brand. “This new Bomberger’s PFG ™ release continues our efforts to further experiment with Bomberger’s and push the boundaries of American whiskey. It’s a wonderful expression with great texture and a remarkable spectrum of rich, full flavors resulting from our team’s thoughtful exploration of wood science under very specific conditions.”

The 100.2-proof whiskey underwent a distinctive maturation process. Michter’s took Kentucky straight bourbon and aged it in a new toasted and charred American oak barrel. The whiskey then was removed from the barrel and spent some time in a second, new proprietary toasted and charred French fine grain oak barrel that was custom toasted to Michter’s specs. It was subsequently batched and filtered before being bottled.

Michter’s shared that its Bomberger’s PFG™ finishing barrel is a custom barrel with wood from the Vosges, Nevers, Allier and Tronçais forests. The wooden staves spent 40 months drying outdoors in France near the Charente River.

Bomberger’s, along with Shenk’s Homestead, are considered “secret Michter’s” brands, due to the name “Michter’s” not being featured prominently on the label. Though Bomberger’s is under-the-radar, it isn’t short on acclaim.

The 2024 vintage of Bomberger’s Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey was a critical darling. It made the No. 31 spot on Bottle Raider’s 100 Best Whiskeys of 2024, According to the Internet’s Most Trusted Spirits Critics.

Drew Beard of Drinkhacker referred to it as his favorite Bomberger’s release to date, and Bottle Raiders’ Jay West referred to it as a “delightful” whiskey, with characterful aromas of toffee, brioche and waffle cone.
