Bomberger’s PFG™ vs. the Best Michter’s Whiskeys: Where Does It Stand?

Michter’s has long been renowned for producing some of the finest American whiskeys — so renowned, in fact, that it’s been named the World’s Most Admired Whiskey two years in a row by Drinks International. The latest release from Michter’s, Bomberger’s PFG™ (Precision Fine Grain) Kentucky Straight Bourbon, has quickly garnered attention. But how does this newcomer compare to the very best offerings from Michter’s? To answer this question, we turned to the Bottle Raiders Raided Score® — a system that aggregates ratings from trusted critics across the internet and provides a single, clear score for each spirit.
What Is Bomberger’s PFG™?
Released for the first time in January 2025, Bomberger’s PFG™ is a meticulously crafted bourbon that showcases Michter’s dedication to precision aging and finishing. It undergoes an initial aging process in new toasted and charred American oak barrels before being transferred to new toasted and charred French fine grain oak barrels. These barrels, sourced from the renowned Tronçais, Allier, Nevers, and Vosges forests in France, are made from wood that has been air-dried outdoors for at least 40 months near the Charente River.
After this extensive preparation, the staves are assembled into barrels and subjected to a tightly controlled toasting and charring process. The result is a bourbon of exceptional refinement, available at a suggested retail price of $140 per 750-milliliter bottle.
What Does Bomberger’s PFG™ Taste Like?
Bomberger’s PFG™ offers a bold yet balanced drinking experience. On the nose, it delivers an inviting blend of powdered sugar, crème brûlée, buttercream, cherry, almond, cinnamon and gingerbread, underscored by a subtle spice. The palate is rich and decadent, featuring notes of cherry, cake batter, hazelnut, toasted oak, caramel apple, butterscotch, white pepper, candied ginger and clove. The mouthfeel is moderately viscous, enhancing the bourbon’s luxurious profile. As the sip lingers, the finish leans into warming spices—cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and pepper—alongside hints of tobacco, toasted oak, dried cranberry, peach, tannins, and sweet custard.
Exquisitely balanced, it may not be the most complex whiskey in the world, but it delivers an undeniably satisfying and classic experience, making it an early contender for whiskey of the year.

Bomberger’s PFG™ Ranks as the 4th Best Michter’s Whiskey
With a Raided Score® of 93 and a house score of 96, Bomberger’s PFG™ has solidified its place among Michter’s elite releases, landing at No. 4 on our list.
Our Methodology: The Raided Score® ensures a balanced assessment by sourcing ratings from multiple respected critics and averaging them. In cases where two spirits receive the same Raided Score, we apply the following tiebreakers:
- Bottle Raiders’ house score: Our in-house experts provide an additional rating.
- Number of reviews aggregated: If a tie remains, the bourbon with more reviews takes precedence.
Also worth noting: To maintain fairness and reduce subjectivity, we only considered bourbons with at least two aggregated reviews. This ensures that no single critic’s opinion disproportionately influences the rankings. Additionally, we only considered the latest release of each spirit. For example, multiple editions of a dynamite, reliable bourbon like Michter’s 10 Year Old Single Barrel would crack this list, but for the sake of diversity, we just included the latest release (2024).
