On Monday, James B. Beam Company announced the second release in its Hardin’s Creek Kentucky Series — an experimental line of bourbons designed to test the effects of aging location and put “Kentucky terroir” on full display.

Each Hardin’s Creek Kentucky Series bourbon is distilled from the same mashbill and aged for the same period of time (17 years). The only distinguishing factor is where the maturation takes place. Each bourbon in the series is aged at a different Beam Kentucky campus. This edition was aged in Frankfort. The series debuted with the June release of Clermont and will conclude in September with Boston.

“These liquids are comprised of the same mash bill, and aged for the same amount of time, but resulted in a different tasting profile. It’s a real testament to how micro-climates and diverse landscapes can impart major differences on the flavor profile of each whiskey,” Freddie Noe, eighth-generation master distiller of the Fred B. Noe Distillery, said in a news release. “The humidity and airflow in our Frankfort campus influence the evaporation and oxidization processes, making a slower reaction to the color and flavor.”

Bottled at 110 proof, Hardin’s Creek Kentucky Series Frankfort has a suggested retail price of $169.99.
