Bardstown Bourbon Co. announced this week that it is unveiling two whiskeys just in time for Bourbon Heritage Month. The first is a whiskey finished in casks from the famed Napa winery, Silver Oak, and the second is the 12th release within the brand’s Discovery Series. Both will be available starting Friday.

The bourbon brand’s Silver Oak Finish honors “American craft” and is a blend of six 9-to-15-year-old bourbons that spent time finishing in Silver Oak Cabernet barrels for 17 months. Out of all the wineries in Napa, Bardstown gravitated to Silver Oak’s 50-plus-year tradition of aging its Cabernet Sauvignons in American Oak.

The winery claims that its “best bottles are ahead,” and Bardstown expressed that both brands share this ethos.

“In age-old crafts like winemaking and distillation, creating something new requires curiosity,” Silver Oak Vice President of Winegrowing Nate Weis said in a news release. “This is an ethos that Silver Oak and Bardstown share, be it in the way we connect with our customers in the Napa Valley or Kentucky, or exploring the horizons of our shared passion, American oak.”

The expression features a suggested retail price of $159.99 and clocks in at 108 proof.

Bardstown shared that the Cabernet barrel-finished expression is a blend made up of:

  • 25% 14-year-old whiskey from Kentucky with a mashbill of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley
  • 23% 12-year-old Tennessee whiskey with a mashbill of 84% corn, 8% rye and 8% malted barley
  • 22% 10-year Kentucky whiskey with a mashbill of 78% corn, 13% rye and 9% malted barley
  • 15% 9-year-old whiskey from Indiana with a mashbill of 75% corn 21% rye and 4% malted barley
  • 10% 10-year-old Kentucky whiskey with a mashbill of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley
  • 5% 12-year-old Georgia whiskey with a mashbill of 80% corn, 10% rye and 5% wheated malted barley

The bourbon brand expressed that the nose possesses integrated aromas of strawberries, plum and roasted nuts. The palate is rich, with fig, oak, spice and black fruits.

Bardstown Bourbon

As for Bardstown Bourbon Co.’s Discovery 12, the brand shared it clocks in at 115.2 proof and hosts a suggested retail price of $139.99. The bourbon is a blend of four whiskeys, including some of Bardstown Bourbon Co.’s own distillate. The bourbons range from 6 to 14 years old.

Forty-eight percent of the blend is a Kentucky bourbon that is 14 years old, with a mashbill of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley. Twenty-nine percent is a Kentucky bourbon that is a decade old and features a mashbill of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley. Fifteen percent is a Kentucky rye that’s 10 years old, with a mashbill of 78% corn, 13% rye and 9% malted barley. The final 8% is Bardstown’s own distillate and is a 6-year bourbon with a mashbill of 60% corn, 26% rye, 10% wheat and 4% malted barley.

Bardstown described Discovery Series 12 as possessing aromas of baked cherry, vanilla cream, and hazelnut. The palate is a balanced mixture of wood sugar and spice, with a finish of coconut and red fruit.

Bardstown’s latest release follows May’s drop of a collaboration with Indian whiskey powerhouse, Amrut. Bardstown claimed that Amrut is “creating beautiful liquid right now,” and cited the producer’s whiskeys as a “bridge between Scottish whiskey and bourbon.”

The release hosts a suggested retail price of $159.99.
