On Monday, California whiskey brand Wolves Whiskey announced the launch of its first American Single Malt whiskey, Wolves Lot One.

Each Wolves’ American single malt lot comprises eight to 12 barrels. Master Distiller Marko Karakasevic distilled the whiskey in a pot still and, according to the brand, slept in four-hour shifts during distillation so that “he alone could make each cut, selecting the ‘heart of hearts’ for double distillation.

Wolves Lot One was distilled in 2015 and will be released April 6.

“Marko is an artist…this could be his opus,” Wolves Whiskey co-founder Jon Buscemi said in a news release. “This library of whiskey is insanely good.”

Wolves Whiskey blended together 11 of the 12 barrels in Lot One and bottled the whiskey at 110 proof. The release will comprise 2,250 bottles and will be made available through select retailers at a suggested price of $289. It also will be available for pre-sale to members of the Wolves Allocation List, which can be registered for at wolveswhiskeyca.com, starting March 30.

The 12th barrel (barrel No. 574) was selected as a single-barrel release and bottled at 125 proof. All 228 bottles of the single-barrel release will be offered exclusively to select members on the brand’s Allocation List at a price of $350.

“We believe this could be the richest and most complex American Single Malt whiskey ever produced,” Wolves CEO Jeremy Joseph said. “ASM is an emerging category within the domestic whiskey landscape, and this is a best-in-class example of craftsmanship and flavor within it.”

Wolves Lot One will be the first release under the Wolves Malted Barley Series. Each bottle in the series will be hand-numbered and wrapped in a sheepskin label.

American single malt whiskey is a relatively young but quickly growing and exciting category.
