Oregon distillery Westward Whiskey announced its fourth and last whiskey club release of 2023, Westward Whiskey Cognac Cask.
The spirit was aged for four years in new American Oak barrels prior to spending one extra year in Cognac casks. The Cognac casks held XO Cognac for over 40 years, and Westward Lead Blender Miles Munroe says he had been searching for the perfect casks for quite some time.
“Cognac is one of the world’s most renowned spirits, known for its great history of blending and maturation techniques which creates complexity in the final spirit,” Munroe said in a news release. “Finding these extraordinary French barrels was key to this unique creation, which artfully blends the distinct flavors of American whiskey with the refined profile of a well-aged Cognac.”
Bottled at 90 proof, the whiskey has a suggested retail price of $100 and is exclusively available to Westward Whiskey Club members.
The Westward Whiskey Club began in 2019. Though its whiskeys were initially available only to individuals residing in Oregon, its membership base has expanded to 35 states.
According to the brand, the club has the largest reach from any whiskey distillery. Members have access to club-exclusive whiskey launches, events, access to distillery tours amongst other perks.
On Nov. 1, Westward unveiled its inaugural “luxury” expression, a whiskey that was aged in a 21-barrel solera system. The solera system is implemented in sherry aging, particularly within the region of Jerez, Spain.
