Buffalo Trace announced the release of Weller Millennium, an experimental extended-aged blended whiskey composed of vintage wheated bourbon and wheat whiskeys. Some of the liquid in the blend dates back to 2000.
The brand claimed in 2000 that it wanted to set aside some of its whiskeys distilled in the new millennium and that this blended wheated whiskey was 24 years in the making.
“At Buffalo Trace Distillery, our motto is ‘Honor Tradition, Embrace Change,” Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley said in a statement. “As we are in constant pursuit of making the world’s best whiskey, we often hold back lots of barrels to continue aging beyond our typical brand standards in hope that this aging experimentation will result in a particularly well-balanced, matured whiskey. In this case, we found the whiskey distilled in 2000 to show incredible balance and asked ourselves how wheat would perform as an ultra-aged spirit. It’s proven to be an impeccable backbone to this expression, allowing us to showcase wheat’s versatility and innovate beyond traditional wheated bourbon.”
Weller Millennium is composed of straight bourbon and wheat whiskeys that were distilled in 2006, 2005, 2003 and 2000. The 99-proof whiskey hosts a suggested retail price of $7,500 and will be released in limited quantities starting in June.
The brand claims this whiskey possesses a rich and caramel-driven nose, with a woodiness from the extended time in oak. The palate possesses a subtlety, with plenty of dried fruit qualities of figs and stone fruit. Weller Millennium finishes with caramel and plenty of oak throughout.
Weller Millennium is housed in a handmade crystal decanter that features a crystal stopper with Weller’s signature “W,” which Buffalo Trace claims serves as a stamp of quality for the liquid.
Buffalo Trace explained that the release of Weller Millennium celebrates the brand’s legacy which dates back to the 1840s, when William Larue Weller began incorporating wheat as an ingredient in bourbon.
“Today, wheated recipes comprise some of the most coveted whiskies in the world, of which Weller has earned global recognition as the most awarded brand from the World’s Most Award-Winning Distillery,” said Buffalo Trace’s Global Brand Director Andrew Duncan in a statement. “This world-class expression captures the spirit of incredible optimism felt at the turn of the millennium, while charting a path to the future as a globally-celebrated wheated brand.”
