On Friday, Virginia Distillery, a pioneer of the American single malt category, announced the release of its latest whiskey: VDC Blue Ridge Select Toasted Oak Finish American Single Malt Whisky.
This new whiskey was released to celebrate National Virginia Day, which was Saturday. Distilled from 100% malted barley, this single malt was aged for at least four years in first-fill Kentucky bourbon barrels and then finished in new toasted oak barrels sourced from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
“Our goal with Blue Ridge Toasted Oak was to create a whisky that captures the spirit of our Blue Ridge Mountain home,” Virginia Distillery Company CEO Gareth Moore said in a news release. “By combining first-fill bourbon barrels with virgin toasted oak barrels from Virginia, we’ve achieved a whisky with exceptional depth and complexity. We are proud to celebrate National Virginia Day with this unique expression and share it with both our loyal customers and those new to the American Single Malt category.”
Bottled at 93 proof, this whiskey will debut in the Fall at select retailers, online and in Virginia Distillery’s tasting room. It has a suggested retail price of $44.95 per 700-milliliter bottle.
Virginia Distillery Teams Up With Goose Island and Hardywood for ‘The Brewer’s Coalition’

It’s been a busy month for Virginia Distillery. Earlier in September, the producer announced a new series of whiskey: The Brewer’s Coalition. This series of limited-edition single malts finished in beer casks kicks off with two whiskeys finished in casks sourced from Chicago’s Goose Island and Virginia’s Hardywood breweries.
Owned by Anheuser-Busch, Goose Island is famed for its wildly popular Bourbon County stouts — and those are precisely the casks Virginia Distillery borrowed.
A Bottled-In-Bond whiskey, Goose Island Bourbon County Stout Cask Finish American Single Malt has notes of brown sugar, coffee beans and honeycomb on the nose, which transition into malty chocolate, citrus, cinnamon and hazelnuts on the palate, according to Virginia Distillery.
The other debut Brewer’s Coalition release, Hardywood Gingerbread Stout Cask Finish American Single Malt, spent time aging in barrels that previously held Hardywood’s Gingerbread Stout. According to Virginia Distillery, this whiskey boasts candied lemon peel, apricot and bright ginger on the nose and walnuts, gingerbread cookies, vanilla icing and lingering baking spice on the palate.
Both Brewer’s Coalition whiskeys were aged for at least five years in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in stout barrels. They’re both bottled at 50% ABV and host a suggested retail price of $49.95 per 700-milliliter bottle. Both expressions will be available this fall at select retailers and bars, plus Virginia Distillery Co.’s tasting room and online shop.
