On a flight headed to Moscow, a Russian hockey player threatened to blow up the plane when flight attendants refused to give him a drink. The 39-year-old, Andrei Sidyakin plays for the Russian Hockey League team Monetka in Yekaterinburg and was headed to Ural, Russia.

The hockey player had a hankering for Vodka, which is Russia’s most popular alcohol and is considered by many to be the national drink. However, Sidyakin’s desire for the beverage went to an extreme and caused havoc for the flight crew.

According to a post on a popular Russian instant messaging service, the hockey player “generally behaved defiantly” on board the plane and “pestered” the cabin crew. Sidyakin ordered a vodka but was denied service. It is unclear from the report if he was already drunk or if the staff were simply irritated with his behavior.

It was reported by Mash, a Russian language channel, that after being denied, Sidyakin “went for broke.” He informed the flight attendants that he had a bomb before attempting to open the plane’s door.

The flight attendants searched the plane for the rest of the flight in an attempt to find evidence of explosive devices or weapons. However, no evidence of an explosive device was discovered and it appears the aircraft did not divert and continued to Moscow.

When the flight landed, Sheremetyevo Airport security officers and police officers searched the plane again but found no evidence of a bomb. Oddly, Sidyakin was not detained for making a false bomb threat which in the US could result in a $5,000 fine or five years imprisonment, or both under the Federal “bomb hoax” statute.

Although the authorities did not detain the hockey player, he was denied further travel and was told to find a different way to continue his trip to Ural.
