  • That double-double finishing time has been kind to this whiskey, resulting in a rich dram that in some ways punches above its 90.4 proof.

  • Nose:

The nose is deep, dark and jam-packed with flavor: a captivating marshmallow fluff note leaps out, joined by custard, cherry, orange peel, gingerbread, oak, root beer and a wisp of smoke. Delicious nose.

  • Taste:

Quite oaky on the palate, but I'm relieved to say it works. I don't feel like I'm licking a barrel, although this is certainly geared toward fans of oak. Barrel char and tannin are joined by notes of cherry, peach, lemon candies, burnt marshmallows, banana pudding, cinnamon, leather, butterscotch and orange marmalade

  • Finish:

Tasty burnt marshmallow carries on throughout the duration of a long finish, joined by root beer, cherry, barrel char, tannin and maple syrup.

  • Overall:

This bourbon is remarkably dark in color for its proof, and the flavor backs that up. This is a dark, brooding, oaky pour that is impressively packed with flavor despite its relatively tame ABV. I believe the finishing process being done in a toasted barrel goes a long way here, imparting that soft, sweet and toasty flavor. It teeters on the verge of over-oaked status — and maybe toes that line here and there toward the back palate and finish — but all in all is a totally delicious, enjoyable pour that punches above its proof. Well done, Woodford!
