  • If you want a Weller you can just pour and drink, go any of the standard Weller releases, especially the 12 (if you can find it, of course). This isn’t that Weller. This Weller is more like a vintage car that you need to tinker with, appreciate it for what it is, and let it reward you with its spectacle.

  • On the palate, the butterscotch comes on strong, along with some marzipan and orange oil. Add water and the whiskey takes on an evergreen edge, though it’s still tempered with that almond paste/butterscotch sweetness. Kind of an odd combination of flavors — each enjoyable enough on its own, but all together a little bit scattered.

  • Given its considerable proof, it's hardly noticeable, perhaps distracted by its truly yummy and balanced flavors. Mmmmmmmm.

  • 2015 William Larue Weller Bourbon is, in a word, incredible. The nose is dense and rich even after several rounds of slowly adding water to see what emerges. The palate is the same and delivers a complex flavor that keeps moving and morphing – one minute it’s dried figs and cherries the next it’s more raisins and strawberries. The finish is equally nice and fades out oaky earthy and sweet.

  • This is a phenomenal product. It's not as balanced or complex as the 2016 release but that is a far cry from making this a bad product. I love the notes here and this stands to be the only wheater that I really enjoy to this level. I'm giving this a Rank 8. Still a wonderful dram.

  • Nose:

Sweet cotton candy. Toffee, caramel, pepper, vanilla and a hint of clove. Definitely less fruity than the 2016 and a little more peppery. The ethanol is very aggressive here also.

  • Taste:

Sweet buttery toffee. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Peppers, some clove, a whole bunch of creamy icing. The proof here is a bit on the hot side, but still not punishing. Less tame than the 2016, though.

  • Finish:

Long, rich and layered. Nice and sweet with some good peppery balance. Really quite nice.

  • Overall:

This is a phenomenal product. Its not as balanced or complex as the 2016 release but that is a far cry from making this a bad product. I love the notes here and this stands to be the only wheater that I really enjoy to this level. I'm giving this a Rank 8. Still a wonderful dram.
