This is supposedly a blend of 8-10 year old whiskies, according to murky internet information. The sample I am trying bears the small batch designation, although it once was a single barrel release. It is generally well accepted that this is a sourced product, with more and more of the blend being replaced by Willett produced bourbon as their stocks come of age. I will admit, it is sort of cute, as far as distillery produced and sold miniatures go.

  • Willett Pot Still Reserve may be worth a little extra coin to showcase the bottle on your shelf, though after visually taking it in, the flavor profile might leave some a bit disappointed.

  • With the distinctive packaging, this bourbon also makes a great gift for just about any bourbon drinker. Overall, Willett Pot Still Reserve will not disappoint, but it also doesn’t have any wow-factor that sets it apart from the pack.

  • The finish long and varies. Runs from caramel, floral, herbal and apple notes.

  • The taste is lemony and tart at first, with a wave of cinnamon that accentuates the tartness without overpowering it. The finish is tart with a lingering lemony touch.

  • There’s a subtle bit of cocktail cherries on the medium-length finish, which again reminds me of Old Bardstown, but that bourbon has a slightly richer palate, higher proof, and a significantly lower price tag. Pot Still Reserve is solid stuff, but it doesn’t quite live up to its fancy packaging.

  • Not a lot going on here, its hot, muted palate paired with a short, astringent finish lands this squarely in multiple flaw territory.

  • Nose:

Corn, wet cardboard (mild), vanilla icing, faint clove

  • Taste:

Thin, some heat. Corn, vanilla, grass, really not a lot going on here. Maybe faint oak.

  • Finish:

Short, hot. Oaky, faintly musty, some vanilla. Astringent.

  • Overall:

Not a lot going on here. Its hot, muted palate paired with a short, astringent finish lands this squarely in multiple flaw territory.
