  • I wanted to like this so much, but it just didn’t come together. It carries too much of that immature, raw, woody, craft whiskey, profile that I just can’t get over. Feels like this barrel just wasn’t ready yet.

  • An impressive start from this young Kentucky distillery, though the short finish shows it has some developing yet to do.

  • The finish is very long, and here the pepper just lasts and lasts while being complemented well by honey and caramel notes. Excellent!

  • It’s not overly complex, but the flavors that are present are nicely balanced and complemented by just the right amount of smoldering, back-of-the-throat heat. The finish is medium-long with a touch of wintergreen and cherry candy.

  • At $50 for a single-barrel, bottled-in-bond bottle, this is a bourbon I’m definitely keeping on my shelf. With that said, I’d be interested to see if a little more age pushes some of the corn notes from the nose into sweeter caramel/toffee notes.

  • This particular barrel from Wilderness Trail is well on its way. The youth is there, though only just, and I’m confident this is nearing its prime. Little more time needed, though.

  • Nose:

Sweet, buttery, creamy. Lovely toffee note, werthers, rising bread, vanilla bean.

  • Taste:

Bright and sweet. A fun fruit loops note. Light malty character, some grain and grass.

  • Finish:

Medium, mellow finish. Lightly grainy here once more, tons of caramel, vanilla, a touch of youth.

  • Overall:

This particular barrel from Wilderness Trail is well on its way. The youth is there, though only just, and I’m confident this is nearing its prime. Little more time needed, though.
