Wilderness Trail Cask Strength Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey made at the Wilderness Trail Distillery in Danville. It uses a mash bill of 56% rye, 33% corn and 11% malted barley, and is made with a sweet mash process. It is a single barrel, non-chill-filtered release bottled at cask strength, usually around 55% ABV, and sells for about $60 to $70.
As it opens up, things get more dessert-y with some vanilla custard and orange creamsicle. The brightness carries through to the palate with a big burst of orange citrus and clove.
There is an overall sweetness throughout this. I get a lot of caramel and toasted oak on the front. This transitions to a leathery spice at the mid-palate.
