WhistlePig The Boss Hog XIII: The Golden Pharaoh is the 2026 release of WhistlePig's annual ultra-premium The Boss Hog series. According to WhistlePig, its The Boss Hog releases always adhere to five promises: single barrel, bottled at proof, "Powerfully Complex," "Distinctly Unique From Anything We’ve Done Before" and "Stupendous!"
Released Sept. 9 for presale (the first time WhistlePig has opened a presale for a The Boss Hog release) and Sept. 29 for a nationwide launch, The Golden Pharaoh is the first The Boss Hog release to take inspiration from Africa. According to WhistlePig, the idea for this whiskey came from a tiger nut cake, the recipe for which, according to WhistlePig, was found carved into the side of a tomb dating back more than 3,000 years. When recreated by WhistlePig in Vermont, the cake inspired a cask finish in barrels seasoned with Egyptian black honey and tiger nuts. Tiger nuts are a term for the edible tubers that come from the plant Cyperus esculentus, native to Southern Europe, Africa and Madagascar, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Tiger nuts are a key ingredient in traditional horchata.
WhistlePig The Boss Hog XIII: The Golden Pharaoh is rye whiskey distilled by an undisclosed Kentucky producer (or multiple producers). The whiskey began its journey in new American oak barrels before being transitioned into the barrels seasoned with Egyptian black honey and tiger nuts. It is bottled between 102.6 and 105.6 proof. The bottle we were sent for our house review was right at 102.6.
An interesting note: This is the first The Boss Hog release that I can remember that was distilled in Kentucky. They've typically been Canadian, and last year's was made in Indiana. Perhaps a nod to the December 2025 opening of WhistlePig's gaudy Louisville bar, "The Vault," which the Vermont-based brand framed as a big break into the heart of Bourbon Country?
WhistlePig The Boss Hog XIII: The Golden Pharaoh is available for pre-sale before becoming widely available at The Vault in Kentucky, WhistlePig’s website and the best bars, restaurants and retailers beginning Sept. 29. It has a suggested retail price of $599.99.

The nose is deep, warm, complex and makes me think of Christmas. Molasses, honey, cocoa, cinnamon, clove, orange peel, gingerbread, demerara.
The palate is quite viscous and pretty nuanced. Big honey and molasses notes lead the palate, followed by almonds, orange zest, raisins, cinnamon and nutmeg. The back palate introduces cacao, black tea, macadamia and coconut milk.
The finish is long, opening dark and bitter, with semisweet chocolate and espresso, followed by a distinctive nutty note that's a little bit hard to pin down; it's sort of like macadamia, but roastier and oilier. From there, we get orange peel, a huge hit of cinnamon, sassafras, clove, cardamom and gingerbread.
An excellent release from WhistlePig. Think warm holiday spice; it reminds me of Monkey Bread at times. It has a great mouthfeel and delivers a very nuanced, satisfying and well structured sip. If you have the chance (or want to pay the high asking price) to taste this, allow yourself some time to sit with it. My first reaction to this whiskey was slightly underwhelmed, but it opened up really nicely in subsequent tasting sessions, and at the end of the day, I've come away impressed. The sweet honey isn't overbearing, and it pairs with the spicy Kentucky rye very well.
For me, last year's The Boss Hog release — finished in pulque- and xocolatl-inspired barrels seasoned with pulque curado, cacao and a blend of Mexican chiltepín, guajillo and pasilla peppers — was an all-timer that I'll always remember. This year's doesn't match that greatness, but it's an excellent whiskey.
