WhistlePig Whiskey, the Vermont-based brand known for its rye whiskeys, switched things up with this release, dropping a 10-year-old bourbon. Sourced from an undisclosed producer in Kentucky, this bourbon is bottled at 88 proof — a nod at WhistlePig's new Louisville location, which will open in summer 2025, 880 miles from the WhistlePig Farm in Vermont. The bourbon has a suggested retail price of $89.99 and is aged using what WhistlePig calls a "snout-to-tail" process. Each finishing barrel features two toasted heads — one is Vermont oak with a medium toast, and the other is a Vermont oak smoked maple wood toast. WhistlePig flips the barrels 180 degrees in the warehouse in an effort to "capture each barrel head’s unique toasted flavors and bring out the big, bold character in this palate-pleasing Straight Bourbon Whiskey."

Oak-forward nose with notes of cream soda, barrel char, butterscotch, orange peel, cedar.
Quite oaky on the palate. Peach, peanut brittle, orange peel, cherry, cinnamon, caramel and marshmallow fluff.
The finish is medium in length and continues to lean into oak, which appears with tannin and smoke, joined by buttercream and orange sherbet.
Tasty, pleasant bourbon. At 88 proof, it may not knock the socks off of many bourbon enthusiasts, but it's good and flavorful. This ought to be perfect for anyone who craves an oak-heavy bourbon at an accessible proof. Like many of WhistlePig's releases, though, I can't help but wish it was proofed a bit higher.
